Great Yarmouth Borough Council has revealed the name of the new £17m library, university and learning centre being developed in the town centre. The landmark former Palmers department store will be known as The Place when it opens its doors next September. The 5,300 sqm, five-storey building first opened as a drapers in 1837 and is being transformed as part of a wider ambition to locate all relevant learning and training functions in a single, high-profile building in central Great Yarmouth. Ultimately, the aim is to increase the number of people in the town who hold qualifications above Level 4 so they can obtain high-quality and sustainable jobs. Chantry Place will be rebranding to Chantry Palace for the Coronation of King Charles III and has enlisted the help of Norfolk schools to help decorate the Centre. Students from Free School Norwich, The Hamlet Centre, Magdalen Gates Primary, Lionwood Nursery and Primary, and Fairhaven C.E.V.A Primary School have each decorated a giant crown, which will be on display at Chantry Place from Saturday 22nd April until Monday 8th May. The crowns will line the walkway between H&M and Phase Eight, Hobbs and Whistles on the upper ground floor. Breckland Council has teamed up with the National Trust charity to plant three thousand trees at Oxburgh Hall. The new partnership brings together Breckland Council’s commitment to plant more trees in the district as part of its environment sustainability goals and the National Trust’s aim of planting a total of twenty million trees across the country. The district council is to invest up to £25,000 to support the woodland restoration project, which will see native, broadleaf trees placed on seven acres of land during the autumn-winter 2023 planting season. Oxburgh Hall is between Swaffham and Downham Market. The scheme will enhance biodiversity and sustainability within the district and be securely fenced-off to prevent predation by the local deer population.

Swaffham high street set to bloom this summer

A Norfolk market town centre will see an explosion of greenery and scented herbs this summer thanks to an investment by Historic England and Breckland Council’s Market Town Initiative programme. Starting in late March, contractors will be installing four large new trees alongside the eastern side of Swaffham’s high street. Six large planters which will include olive trees and herb garden bases will also be put in place. The work will create an attractive green walking trail from the Swaffham town centre bus stops and along the main high street, taking shoppers and visitors past a wide variety of independent shops and hospitality venues. A joint project between the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, the RNLI and the le Strange Estate will help to improve beach safety at Old Hunstanton beach. New signage will help people to make informed and safe choices about their visit to the beach by providing updateable information about tide times and hazards. It will be installed by Easter. Cllr Stuart Dark MBE, council leader, said: “We know that our local lifeboat crew do wonderful work so, when they approached us saying that they were having more emergency callouts in Old Hunstanton due to holidaymakers not knowing the tide times and the dangers of being cut off from shore, we wanted to help them all we could.

New public artwork unveiled in royal garden

A ceremony at the newly-refurbished Queen Mother’s Garden in Dereham has seen a new piece of public art unveiled and a time capsule buried for future generations. The Lord-Lieutenant for Norfolk, Lady Dannatt MBE, revealed the new bronze artwork, entitled ‘The Gift’ at the event this week. The sculpture features a rose in a female hand and was created by international sculptor Mitchell House and concept designer Susan Ashby. Based in Norfolk, Mr House is a traditionally trained sculptor whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in galleries and public places. The artwork sits on a carved oak plinth produced by Paul Downs. At the event, a time capsule was buried filled with letters, postcards, newspapers, and other commemorative items from the current day. Great Yarmouth Borough Council has been working with a wide range of community groups to involve them in the ambitious new project to restore the town’s iconic Winter Gardens As part of its consultation work around the exciting regeneration scheme, the council team has been running workshops, site visits and events to explain the plans for the seafront landmark and seek community feedback and input. The Winter Gardens is the last surviving Victorian glass house in the country and, in 2021, was one of five transformational projects across the country to be awarded a Heritage Horizon Award from The National Lottery Heritage Fund made possible thanks to funding from National Lottery players/ The Heritage Horizon Awards were developed to support innovative projects that will revolutionise UK heritage.

On 24 February it will be a year since President Putin began his illegal invasion of Ukraine, an act that has had global consequences. A national moment of reflection is planned on Friday morning at 11 o’clock, which King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council will be observing. The council will be flying the Ukraine flag and the Corn Exchange and the Custom House will be lit up in the colours of the flag in the evening. Coinciding with Valentine's Day and the opening of the historic King's Lynn Mart in the town's Tuesday Market Place, Love West Norfolk Day provided people with an opportunity to celebrate what they love about this beautiful borough.The theme this year was again Green Love West Norfolk, encouraging people to really think about and celebrate their environment, from beautiful beaches, to rolling countryside, nature reserves and areas of outstanding natural beauty, and of course the big skies that are so popular with star gazers.People started posting images with the hashtag #lovewestnorfolk ahead of the day itself, showcasing the things they love about the area, and lots of groups have requested Love West Norfolk litter-picking kits, to help make their local environment even more beautiful.

Six of Great Yarmouth’s most iconic buildings are lit up to celebrate love this February, with the Council having launched a special “trail of love” for residents and visitors to enjoy.For the last two weeks of February, special lighting is being projected on the Town Hall, Tollhouse, St George's Theatre, the Minster Church of St Nicholas, the Arc Cinema, and Gorleston Pavilion to create a stunning immersive experience.Celebrating the theme of love, each chosen building is showcasing patterns of love hearts and cupid from Thursday, February 16.
