Air Ambulance presented with plaque for service during pandemic

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) in Norwich has been awarded a Memorial Project plaque by the Norfolk Lieutenancy, to commemorate the air ambulance community’s resilience and service during the year of the pandemic.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk, The Lady Dannatt, MBE, visited the EAAA headquarters in Norwich yesterday to present the plaque which recognises the air ambulance charity for its resilience and special service to the Norfolk community during the year of the Covid pandemic. The plaque will be proudly displayed in the main reception of  EAAA’s new 24-hour operational base, Helimed House, at Norwich Airport.

During 2020 and 2021, EAAA maintained its life-saving service while operating under the very difficult conditions presented by the pandemic and the need to wear full protective clothing when responding to 999 calls. EAAA also assisted the NHS with inter-hospital transfers of sedated Covid-19 patients, to alleviate pressure in intensive care units for the busiest hospitals in the region. These patients had to be transferred by land ambulance and the level of care required to move these critically ill patients safely, often over long distances, was extremely challenging for the EAAA doctor and critical care paramedic teams involved.

All of this was made possible by the generous support of the community which responded magnificently to EAAA’s emergency Covid appeal, to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE), and due to the resilience and strength of all members on the EAAA team during this time. During the plaque presentation, the Lord-Lieutenant was briefed on current operations and given a tour of the new 24-hour base.

Matthew Jones, CEO, of East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “Speaking on behalf of everyone at East Anglian Air Ambulance, we are absolutely delighted to receive this plaque in recognition of our Covid response. I am immensely proud that we were able to continue our service throughout the pandemic and know how hard all of our teams worked to make sure that our crews could continue to be there for our patients, as well as providing additional support, when needed, to local hospitals in transferring Covid-19 patients between intensive care units.

“None of this would have been possible without the fantastic support we received from the community when we asked for help in purchasing personal protective equipment for our frontline team members. This plaque will be proudly displayed in our main reception, to remind us all of the challenges we faced, and continue to face, in fighting Covid-19.”

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk, The Lady Dannatt, MBE, added: “The commemorative plaques were commissioned to mark the courage, generosity and determination during the pandemic. The EAAA was able to keep flying and responding to 999 calls throughout, including transferring COVID-19 patients between intensive care units. Local people helped purchase PPE equipment to enable the EAAA to continue their vital work and we owe our profuse thanks to everyone at the EAAA.”

  • Inspiring the next generation of female helicopter pilots at EAAA

A young woman with ambitions to carve out a career flying air ambulance missions has enjoyed a meeting with a female helicopter pilot during a visit to the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA). Abi Lewis was inspired after learning that just 3.7% of helicopter pilots are women*.

EAAA, a charity that provides life-saving critical care 24/7 by air and road, recently invited Year 13 Norwich High School for Girls student Abi to their Norwich Headquarters. After learning of Abi's career aspirations, the charity offered an introduction to female co-pilot Henrietta Davies and a tour of Helimed House, their Norwich base.

Abi says: "I was inspired by the fact that only 3.7% of commercial helicopter pilots are women. After which, I booked my first lesson and have been addicted ever since!" Abi, age 18, passed her helicopter pilot's exam earlier this year and gained her Private Pilot's License (PPL) in just 18 months while studying for her A-Levels. She began flying at age 16 and completed nine ground exams, a flight test, a radio exam, and ten solo flying hours, including cross-country flights to two different airfields to gain her license. Abi plans to use this to begin her path of study for a Commercial Pilot's Licence, with the ambition to become an air ambulance pilot.

  • EAAA crew move into new Norwich headquarters as they prepare to fly 24/7

Life-saving crews from East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) have moved into their new Norwich headquarters, ahead of planned 24/7 operations later this summer.

The charity, which has been operating from temporary accommodation for over a year, launched its mission to deliver a 24/7 air ambulance service in the East of England back in 2019. This week, despite delays due to the pandemic, that goal is one step closer as its life-saving crews have moved into the charity’s newly built 24/7 operating base at Norwich Airport.

The Anglia One helicopter team will start flying 24/7 from the base in late June, after a short settling-in period.

Funded through generous gifts in Wills, the £7 million development will enable the charity to finally have the training, rest and welfare facilities required for a fully 24/7 helicopter operation and will make EAAA the first air ambulance in the East of England to fly round the clock.

By flying 24/7 the charity estimates it could be tasked by helicopter up to 600 more times a year, delivering critical care to those in need faster at night and closing the five-and-a-half-hour gap where there is currently no helicopter coverage in the region (between 1:30am and 7:00am).

  • 20 years together – East Anglian Air Ambulance

20 years ago, on 6 September 2000, a new charity was formed to help save lives across East Anglia: the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA). Operating initially just one day a week, on a Friday from Norwich Airport, with one paramedic, this was the start of an important lifeline for many local people.

Monday, the start of National Air Ambulance Week, EAAA can reveal that over the last 20 years it has flown almost 30,000 missions and helped almost 20,000 patients, all thanks to the generosity of local people.

At a time of so much uncertainty, the charity, which needs to raise £13 million a year to develop and deliver its service, and is aiming to start flying 24/7 for the first time next year, is deeply grateful for the public support which has enable it to pass this milestone.
